Canadian Idol Is Ready To Rock
Rumour has it that Canadian Idol is looking for a certifiable rockstar this year. I don’t know if this is true, but, if so, then they are definitely making a smart move in the right direction. Canadian Idol has yet to crown a genuine rockstar as the winner in any season and, although Season 2 winner Kalan Porter favours rock music, I find that his overall look, personality and voice are far too refined for this genre of music.
We have had spinoff Idol rockstars, however - those that have made the Top 10 but never won the actual title, such as Season One finalist Billy Klippert and Season 2 finalist Jacob Hoggard. So, if Canadian Idol finds the real deal this year in this genre of music, they may just hit gold.
For some reason I am looking forward to this year’s competition. I intuitively feel that this year’s show is going to be excellent (and no - I do not know anyone associated with the Top 200 this year). It’s just a Masterclass instinct.
Here is this year’s schedule:
Premieres Tuesday, June 5 with 90-minute audition episode, 8:00 - 9:30 p.m. (featuring Toronto, Ottawa, Calgary, Winnipeg, St. John’s and Halifax)
Continues Tuesday, June 12 with 90-minute audition episode, 8:30 - 10 p.m. (Saskatoon, Montreal, Vancouver and London)

American Idol Season 6 Vocal Masterclass For The Top 2 Performances
By: Rosanne Simunovic
We have finally reached the end of the Idol road, but, for Blake and Jordin, this is the auspicious beginning of their musical career. American Idol has afforded them a tremendous opportunity for exposure and promotion and we can only anticipate the wonderful things in store for them in their post Idol musical success.

Vocal Masterclass Discussion Thread For The Top 2 Performances
Can it be? Have we really reached the TOP 2 already? Every year it seems that the weeks leading up to the American Idol Finale fly by faster and faster. Perhaps the rationale is that, even after all these weeks, I still could not figure out where this show was going this season. It didn’t have a sense of purpose and personal favorites kept “topsy turvying” around in my head from week to week.
I think the talent pool was actually quite good this year; however, with so little focus on the contestants - save for Sanjaya - and their backgrounds, the show felt a little flat and predictable this season. And who here doesn’t think Jordin is going to win? Even Blake, her co-finalist wants her to win? Now, there’s a first.
Simon is walking around pouting over Melinda’s exit - and rightfully so. Usually his favorite was granted a place in the Finale, but then, come to think of it, his pick, Chris Daughtry, didn’t reach this stage last year either. He has done phenomenally well nonetheless, so, apparently, it doesn’t really matter anymore who wins this competition. Maybe that’s the rub. Don’t win, sell big! But then that would not explain Kelly’s or Carrie’s success. Oy, my head!
Okay, I’ve had my say. The ball’s in your court everyone and spoilers are warmly and greedily welcomed on this blog. (smile)
American Idol Season 6 Vocal Masterclass For The Top 3 Performances
By: Rosanne Simunovic
This week our Final 3 singers showcased the traditional song selections at this stage of the competition: Judge’s Choice, Producer’s Choice and Personal Choice. I can imagine that a great deal of mentoring, arranging and coaching have been percolating throughout the Idol camp this week. Don’t you wish you were a fly on the wall at this stage of the competition? I do.
Blake, Jordin and Melinda rendered some outstanding showcases and underlined their longevity in this competition. So, without further ado, let’s move right into the Masterclass evaluations Full article here

American Idol Season 6 Vocal Masterclass For The Top 4 Performances
By: Rosanne Simunovic
This week, our Top 4 celebrated the music of Barry Gibb and the Bee Gees. As much I love and respect the music of these legendary performers, I just found this to be a strange thematic selection for everyone. This music is very difficult to perform as a soloist and, by the nature of their composition, present vocal and performing challenges that are difficult to overcome.
Blake, Jordin, Lakisha and Melinda really tried to add their unique and distinctive artistic spin on this periodic music and, throughout the evening, about 50% of the performances rang true and held my interest.
All in all, it was not an exciting evening of Top 4 performances. The genre was just not adaptable to the style of the individual singers.
I just wish that, at this stage of the competition, the performers could be allowed to select and perform their preferred genre of music. Personally, I am becoming tired of specific genres being shoved down the singers’ throats. Who does this in the real world, anyway? Some may be capable to sing in two or three different genres, but, in reality, a singer is marketed to a specific brand of music- be it pop, country, classical, jazz, hip hop, rock or Broadway.
Somehow I think the performance outcome would have been a different one if the singers were encouraged to showcase songs that highlighted their specific brand of music. Also, I am almost certain that the variety of song choice would have been appreciated and embraced by the viewers (more…)
Vocal Masterclass Discussion Thread For The Top 4 Performances
Time to beat the Masterclass Lady to the punch. Your comments are most welcome following tonight’s exciting show, featuring our Top 4, Lakisha, Blake, Jordin and Melinda performing the music of the Bee Gees.
You know, every year at this time, I had an idea who would win this competition, but this year? Nada. This has been the most confusing American Idol competition ever - or is it just me who thinks it is? Anyway, blab away, oh wise ones!
Sometime, Life Just Hands You A Huge Curve Ball
Good morning everyone. Yesterday I received the heartbreaking news that my dearest and best friend, Franca Creati Fortner, died after a courageous battle with Lou Gehrig’s disease. Even though I was expecting the call, it still came as a tremendous shock. The loss and the void that has been created with her passing is truly irreplaceable. She was a gift from God, one that I will always cherish.
Vocal Masterclass Discussion Thread For The Top 6 Encore Performances
As I have encountered a musical emergency here in Timmins, it may not be possible to submit a Vocal Masterclass article for the encore performance of our Top 6.
I have to step in to play keyboard for the musical, “Anything Goes”, as the original keyboard player just received news that her father died unexpectedly. The show opens tomorrow and ends Saturday. Never a dull moment. This added to an already busy week of teaching my voice students and another musical commitment for a Church event on the weekend. Wish me luck!
NB: In the midst of all this confusion, I came down with a wicked case of the flu. Up all night. Had to cancel my involvement with “Anything Goes”. Lots of panic-stricken musicians in town now.
So, I thought I would post this thread and we can begin discussion for the Bon Jovi themed Idol showcase tonight.
In the meantime, I am going for a much needed walk around the lake to clear my head! Cheers everyone!
