This week, our Top 6 performers inspired the American Idol viewing audience with “life anthem” songs that signified the humanitarian values of hope and compassion. This theme paralleled the huge Idol Gives Back Performance Gala that was to follow the next evening. This unprecedented event drew some of the world’s biggest entertainment and music stars, all in support for children and young people from the USA and Africa who are living with extreme poverty and endless suffering.

Blake, Chris, Jordin, Lakisha, Melinda and Phil gave absolutely wonderful performances and the format of the show added a very special and meaningful dimension to the entire program. Intermingled with the singer’s performances were heartbreaking, mind and soul-altering video footage, emphasizing everything that many of us take for granted in our daily lives. Simple, yet crucial things like food, water, a clean and healthy environment, good health and peace of mind.

Somewhere during the presentation of this program the performances receded in my mind, as I became extremely pre-occupied by the message delivered through this very unique and very timely show. Priorities were reversed. However, here is what I do remember from these performances. (more…)

DISCUSSION FOR IDOL GIVES BACK GALA

Here we go everyone. Let’s have a round table discussion regarding tonight’s enormously successful Idol Gives Back special. Personally, I was very disappointed that Michael Buble was not on the show as expected. However, the duet between Elvis and Celine made up for it. It was unbelievable wasn’t it? And Josh Groban was amazing as always plus those adorable African children were so sweet while performing with him.

However, it was the footage of the children that was the most memorable. What a horrible situation. I wanted to grab everyone of them through my television screen and bring them into my home. It was so heartbreaking and, as Simon said, they are truly living “hell on earth”.

I hope all the politicians were watching and hanging their heads in shame, knowing that they have allowed this deplorable situation to deteriorate to this level.

Well, I don’t know about you, but I thought the show this evening was absolutely a moving and memorable experience. The performances were extremely well done; however the video footage was extremely disturbing and educational at the same time. I hope that an unbelievable amount of money is raised to benefit these children who are suffering each and every minute of every day from famine and despair.

Please share your thoughts about tonight’s show. What was your favorite moment?

American Idol Season 6 Vocal Masterclass For The Top 7 Performances

Well, thank heavens for Country Music week. I am not a huge country fan, but I do like the crossover appeal of many of the songs from this genre, as well as the fact that, like the song classics from the big band era, the lyrical and melodic components of many of these songs are extremely important.

Country music emphasizes the communication of the poetic emotion with a genuine and tangible singing style. I was hoping that this would propel and motivate the Top 7 to follow this creed, if only to showcase that there is indeed personality and talent hidden within their individual beings.

Well, through the wonderful and constructive guidance of country diva, Martina McBride, the majority of the performances were just wonderful this week. Many of these singers not only soared to new heights, but also rekindled a keen interest in this year’s American Idol season. Now, we have a reason to watch and believe!

Excellent work singers and brava to Martina McBride. (more…)

Now, finally we had a show happening last night. I thought that, generally, the singers were very good and I congratulate the genuine, supportive talent of Martina McBride for nurturing and guiding these singers toward successful and real performances in their country themed showcases.

I will be posting my Vocal Masterclass article sometime tomorrow (maybe today if I can get my act together), but, until then, your comments are always welcome. I would love to generate a lively discussion on this year’s group of singers

American Idol Season 6 Vocal Masterclass For The Top 8 Performances

This week, our Final 8 interpreted the Latin genre of music through the guidance of guest artist, Jennifer Lopez. This style of music emphasizes the rhythmic elements, which are always very contagious and infectious, encouraging the artist to develop a choreographic approach to his or her performing style.

That being said, I hope they never adopt this theme in the near future. Personally I have had the experience to work with a Latin artist and another singer (not of Spanish descent) who thoroughly understood and internalized the genre.

It made me realize that the passion, flow and musical execution of this specialized form of music are not acquired talents. You either get it or you don’t and I don’t think that many of these singers really did justice to the passionate and evocative flavor of the music. (more…)

What a disappointing week. These singers looked completely disoriented on stage during their Latin showcase. Makes me wonder what is happening behind the scenes. It can’t be good.

Until the Vocal Masterclass article is online, please feel free to voice your comments. However - be nice.

A MasterClass Performance

Posted in Masterclass Lady by masterclasslady on April 8th, 2007

This absolutely beautiful gem of a performance features classical stars Bryn Terfel and Renee Fleming performing “Wheels Of A Dream” from the musical “Ragtime”. If anyone has any questions pending about what constitutes really superb and prodigious singing, you will find all the answers to your questions in this video.

As you watch the video, note the relaxed and expressive facial features, the passion for the music, the impeccable phrasing, the flawless and confident technical and artistic elements, the relaxed and effortless demeanor.

I was fortunate enough prepare this song with two young singers who studied with me for many years before leaving for University - Matt Humphreys and Maghan Stewart - and they were excellent.

However, enjoy Bryn and Renee. I guarantee you will be moved by this performance. This has to be one of the best things I have ever discovered on YouTube.
