This week’s guest mentor, Gwen Stefani, coached our final ten singers as they continued their Idol journey toward the American Idol crown. The selected songs featured Gwen’s favorite artists, those who inspired and influenced her in her musical career
Generally speaking, the singers showed a glimmer of personality during their individual showcases, something that has been missing in this year’s group of American Idol finalists. Also, I thought that many of these singers were evolving into very fine, extremely promising young performers, surprising us with their versatility and ability to adapt to a variety of vocal styles.
However, song choice was the key issue this week-it was “make or break” situation for all of these performers. Some singers really understood the importance of the song selection process and it made all the difference in the credibility of their showcase.

American Idol Season 6 Vocal Masterclass For The Top 11 Performances

Before we begin, one reader wrote and suggested that I write separate Vocal Masterclass articles for each singer, so that the comments for each contestant could remain separate from the rest.
I did fully intend to do this, beginning with the Top 11; however, with further thought, I realized that, because of the layout and design of this blog site and other logistic factors, this was not going to be feasible at this time.
I will, however, implement this format when we reach the Top 6 performance show. Until then, please make sure that you identify the singer by name when posting your comments.

Here we go everybody. We are on our way to crowning the next American Idol.
This week, we added another diva to the mix when the legendary Diana Ross appeared as a coach and mentor to this season’s 12 performers. The original Dreamgirl had plenty to say to these young artists. Her advice was excellent, thorough and intuitive and I feel that, generally, the singers’ performances improved through her timely expertise. (more…)

The Top 8 female singers finalized this segment of the competition with their artistic flourish and professionalism. It has been an exciting competition among the females, as their collective talent showcased their eclectic, musically gifted and technically proficient vocal ability during the majority of their performances over the past three weeks.
I hope that all of these talented young vocalists enjoy future success, as their career advances through the experience they gained by their participation on American Idol Season Six.

American Idol Season Six: Vocal Masterclass For The Top 8 Male Performances

For two of these young singers, this will be the end of their performing experience on American Idol. However, I am certain that this level of experience and audience exposure will fortify their future success, as they pursue other avenues on which to build their musical dreams and aspirations.
This week, the nervous energy emanating from the television screen was palpable. Collectively, the singers were not on top of their game, making unwise song selections, exposing faulty technical performances and lacking in artistic confidence and poise. Some fared better than others, but suffice it to say that I did not leave the hour long show with a sense of the “wow factor. Some came close, but, as the saying goes, no cigar! (more…)

Last week was a stellar opening showcase for many of the Top 12 female singers. Some of these singers gave outstanding premiere performances and indeed solidified the depth of talent in this year’s crop of female talent.
So, I waited for this night with great anticipation, wondering if our ladies could exceed their Top 12 performances or, at the very least, replicate the high standard they set during last week’s showcase.
