IFPI to Sue Swedish ISP for Facilitating Copyright Infringement |
|
May 02, 2008 - 5:20 AM - by LiQuIdIzLeR
|
Ideally, the IFPI wants every ISP to act as the Internet police, by restricting their customers access to websites they claim are facilitating copyright infringement.
So far, the IFPI has had little success with their lobby, that’s probably why they decided to put legal pressure on the ISPs. “We believe that ISPs have a special part to play in this and must help us. The discussions we’ve tried to have with the ISPs haven’t led anywhere,” IFPI’s Managing Director in Sweden, Lars Gustafsson, said in response to their recent announcement.
The IFPI claims to have studied several ISPs practices, but according to Lars Gustaffson they intend to focus on one particular company which they claim facilitates filesharing on the Internet. One of the services they hope to stop is their... [Read More]

Music Industry Tricked Artist Into Anti-Piracy Witch Hunt |
|
May 01, 2008 - 5:00 AM - by LiQuIdIzLeR
|
Over the last few days, an anti-piracy video produced by MIPI - Music Industry Piracy Investigations - and circulated around every high school in Australia, has been grabbing a few headlines. The 10 minute video which is designed to be easily spread around the internet, was apparently supported by many Australian artists with Lisa Origliasso of the Veronicas saying: “The problem with downloading obviously is that it’s ruining our industry in a way, because I mean you know artists just aren’t making money, record companies aren’t making money from it.”
Other artists supporting the project include Powderfinger, Silverchair, Jimmy Barnes, Operator Please, Gyroscope, Dawn Collective and punk band, Frenzal Rhomb.
Actually, to say that Frenzal Rhomb support the... [Read More]

Mininovas Traffic Doubles in a Year |
|
Apr 30, 2008 - 5:20 PM - by LiQuIdIzLeR
|
To say that Mininova has grown quite a bit since it has started three years ago, is probably something of an understatement.
November last year saw Mininova breaking into Alexa’s list of the 50 most visited websites on the Internet, which is an amazing achievement in just 36 months . Close to 5 billion torrents have been downloaded already, and with the torrents, the numbers of visitors continues to grow.
Here is a comparison between Mininova’s traffic last month, and a year before that.
March 2007
57,605,816 visits
261,460,196 pageviews
March 2008
109,304,822 visits
530,181,594 pageviews
Mininova’s visitors literally come from all over the world, Google... [Read More]

Mininova Downtime Puts BitTorrent Sites Under Pressure |
|
Apr 29, 2008 - 7:00 PM - by LiQuIdIzLeR
|
Mininova’s Erik told TorrentFreak that there are problems with the network card of the loadbalancer, one of the parts they don’t have a backup for.
The mininova team is working hard to get the site up and running again. The good news is that no data will be lost, the bad news is that it may take a while - possibly 12 hours - because it is a holiday in The Netherlands.
Mininova’s forums are not connected to the loadbalancer, and are still up and running. The same is true for the seeds of their featured content section. Mininova currently has well over 3 million unique visitors per day, and more than 15 million pageviews, which makes them the BitTorrent site with the most traffic.
Consequently, the downtime at... [Read More]

Run Your Own Encrypted Decentralized Filesharing Network |
|
Apr 29, 2008 - 9:50 AM - by LiQuIdIzLeR
|
Last year we wrote about AllianceP2P, a safe and secure way for Windows, Linux and Mac users to share content with each other in an encrypted environment. There are Alliance networks running alongside other filesharing communities, and others set up by mutual friends as an added layer of communications and filesharing capability.
A little like a private tracker, you either have to be invited to an Alliance network - or help the hydra and make your own. It’s very easy to setup and scale your own decentralized network with BitTorrent-like ’swarming’ capabilities using Alliance, and as the software just reached V1.0 we thought it would be a good time to catch up with the creator for the lowdown.
TF: Tell us about the birth of AllianceP2P and why you decided to... [Read More]

Book Authors See BitTorrent As a Promotional Tool |
|
Apr 28, 2008 - 6:10 PM - by LiQuIdIzLeR
|
More and more authors seem to recognize the power of BitTorrent as a means to generate more sales, and actually upload free copies onto BitTorrent themselves.
Best selling author Paulo Coelho posted several of his books on BitTorrent, which boosted his sales significantly. The success of Coelho later inspired Leander Kahney, the author of The Cult of Mac and The Cult of iPod”, to do the same.
A recent discussion on the positives and negatives of piracy confirms changing attitudes towards it. The “behind the scenes” thread on O’Reilly Radar was started by Eric... [Read More]

uTorrent Marked as Trojan by Avast Antivirus |
|
Apr 28, 2008 - 11:50 AM - by LiQuIdIzLeR
|
Of course, there is nothing wrong with uTorrent. The application somehow got listed in Avast’s list of trojans, resulting in a false positive. uTorrent 1.7.7 was mistakenly listed as “Win32oison-DU [Trj]“, whereas the newer Beta’s were unaffected.
Such ‘false positives’ often happen with other harmless applications - better safe than sorry- but since uTorrent doubled its user base in just 12 months and is installed on millions of computers, this problem affected a sizable number of people. It didn’t take long before the issue was reported to Avast, and after approximately 5... [Read More]

Pivotal Canadian BitTorrent Showdown Looming |
|
Apr 27, 2008 - 2:00 PM - by LiQuIdIzLeR
|
In October 2007, a small BitTorrent tracker called QuebecTorrent was pushed into the headlines, having been targeted by the Canadian music industry. It took threats from the CRIA to force Demonoid overseas, so QuebecTorrent might be forgiven for feeling just a little in the spotlight right now. Not only are they facing the CRIA, but also ADISQ and APFTQ (the TV and movie companies) - and CIRPA.
The legal background to the case is available in TorrentFreak’s previous interview with QuebecTorrents back in November 2007. Essentially, it’s felt that the decision in this case will impact the future of all Canadian BitTorrent trackers and have more serious implications, explained here by... [Read More]
